LéaLA (ReadLA) Debuts April 29, 30 and May 1 @ LA Convention Center

Isabel Allende, José José, Elena Poniatowska, Laura Restrepo and Francisco Martin Moreno Among Featured Participants

One of the most ambitious efforts to bring Spanish language books to Los Angeles and the U.S. will make its debut when LéaLA, the Spanish book fair of Los Angeles, debuts April 29, 30 and May 1, at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

The book fair will feature more than 80 renowned authors from different Latin American countries and the U.S. The free event is open to the public and expects to draw over 30,000 people.

Over three days LéaLA will bring together one of the most impressive gatherings of highly acclaimed authors from the literary and cultural worlds. The Mexican state of Jalisco is the honored special guest and in recognition of its rich culture will present three literary greats: Juan Rulfo, Agustín Yáñez and Juan José Arreola; the performance of “Los placeres de la lengua” (The pleasures of language) with Ofelia Medina and Rubén Albarrán, as well as the Ballet Folkorico from the University of Guadalajara.

Stars from the education and entertainment worlds will also take part to foster the Spanish language and to recognize the varied cultural spectrum and traditions of Latinos in this country.

LéaLA is an initiative organized by the University of Guadalajara USA Foundation and supported by the Guadalajara International Book Fair, Feria Internacional del Libro, known worldwide as FIL; and the University of Guadalajara in Los Angeles.

More than 100 publishing houses are ready to offer their best works by hundreds of authors from fiction to non-fiction, from history to anime, for everyone from book aficionados to children just learning to read. A selective and attractive literary and cultural program will complement the sale of books and give the public the opportunity to get close to the Spanish language in an entertaining way while also exploring the wonders of the written page.

The best publishing houses from Latin America, Spain, as well as the U.S. that publish books in Spanish, English and bilingually will showcase their tomes on the already sold out exhibit floor. University Presses and non-profit organizations will also participate.

Further adding to the caliber of the featured activities are the participation of Mexico’s Department of Public Education (Secretaría de Educación Pública), Mexico’s National Autonomous University, (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México), the Mexican National Chamber for the Publishing Industry (Cámara Nacional de la Industria Editorial Mexicana), and Mexico’s National Council for Culture and the Arts, (Consejo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes).

Seminars and workshops about popular trends, current events, the vitality of Latino culture in the U.S. and Latin America, and the history and roots of Latin American countries, will fill the daily programs. Encounters between U.S. Latino authors and Latino authors from other latitudes will offer a wealth of information.

Celebrities will participate in different literary and cultural programs and activities and in particular read to children in the kids’ zone. Many activities and programs will be presented simultaneously in English and Spanish.

Confirmed participants include: The Director of the Royal Spanish Academy, Jose Manuel Blecua; as well as renown authors including Isabel Allende, Franciso Martin Moreno, Xavier Velasco Sealtiel Alatriste, Carmen Boullosa, Sanjuana Martinez, and Sandra Lorenzano, among others.

Also participating will be former Miss Universe, Dayanara Torres; legendary singing superstar, Jose Jose and topping off each day will be evening concerts at the Nokia Theatre with top recording artists including, Lupillo Rivera and Banda El Limon, Pedro Fernandez, and Molotov and Kinky.

Admission is free. Event hours are: 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Los Angeles Convention Center, Concourse Hall, 1201 South Figueroa St., Los Angeles, 90015.

LéaLA, la primera Feria del Libro en Español en Estados Unidos llega a la ciudad de Los Ángeles con la participación de Isabel Allende, Elena Poniatowska, Laura Restrepo y Francisco Martín Moreno, entre otros.

Con el objetivo de continuar con la extensión de sus programas de difusión de la cultura y las artes a la comunidad de origen latino en la ciudadde Los Ángeles, California, la Universidad de Guadalajara llevará a cabo durante tres días uno de los proyectos más ambiciosos en torno alfomento del español: LéaLA, la primera Feria

del Libro en Español de California estará abierta al público y se realizará de forma gratuita los días 29, 30 de abril y 1 de mayo en el Centro de Convenciones de Los Ángeles, California.

LéaLA tiene como propósitos la promoción de la lectura y el libro en español, el reconocimiento a la población latina, su cultura y sus costumbres además de convertirse en el espacio de reflexión sobre la distribución del libro en español y el desarrollo cultural y educativo de millones de hispanohablantes en Estados unidos.

La feria del Libro en Español de Los Ángeles (LéaLA) es una iniciativa respaldada por la Universidad de Guadalajara, Sede Los Ángeles y por la Feria Internacional del Libro de Guadalajara (FIL).

En su primera edición tiene como invitado de honor al estado de Jalisco, México, por lo que habrá un homenaje a tres grandes de las letras jaliscienses: Juan Rulfo, Agustín Yáñez y Juan José Arreola. Se presentará el espectáculo “Los placeres de la lengua” con Ofelia Medina y Rubén Albarrán además del Ballet Folclórico de la Universidad de Guadalajara.

El programa contempla actividades que se realizarán de forma simultanea en inglés y español; conferencias, encuentros entre autores de distintas latitudes, paneles de primer nivel, conciertos con artistas representativos de la cultura latina, así como un área con talleres para niños enfocados específicamente a la lectura y uso del español.

En LéaLA participarán organizaciones sin fines de lucro y en algunas actividades se suma la Secretaría de Educación Pública en México, la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, la Cámara Nacional de la Industria Editorial Mexicana y el Consejo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes.

Dentro de los participantes confirmados hasta el momento se encuentran: José Manuel Blecua, Director de la Real Academia de la Lengua Española, más de 46 escritores como

Isabel Allende, Francisco Matín Moreno, Xavier Velasco, Sealtiel Alatriste, Carmen Boullosa, Rosa Beltrán, Sanjuana Martínez, Sandra Lorenzano, Silvia Olmedo, Benito Taibo, Michael Schuessler, entre otros.

Se contará con la presencia de celebridades tales como Dayanara Torres, el legendario cantante José José, Lupillo Rivera, La original Banda el Limón, Pedro Fernández, Molotov y Kinky.
